Jasper Gorge

by admin

The last time I drove through Jasper Gorge, it was just after the wet, so the country looked so different to what I experienced today. Then, everything looked so green and fresh.

Today, it was so hot in the sunlight and everything is crispy dry. The country looks like it is just begging for some water.

Today, the country is dry and dusty

I have posted some current pictures from my drive through the gorge today. And directly underneath I have added an image from my previous journey, after the Wet season. (interestingly, I took very similar photos on both journeys, three years apart!)

After the Wet, the country is lush and green

The contrast in the country is amazing.

Skull Creek, taken from the same spot on the overhead bridge:

Today Skull Creek is dry and dusty
After the Wet deep water flows in Skull Creek
Today the trees beside Skull Creek are bare
After the Wet the trees come back to life…

Dashwood Crossing on the Buchanan Highway is a major ford across the Victoria River. After the Wet, the road is often flooded and the crossing can be dangerous if the water is flowing fast:

Today I only encountered dust
After the Wet water covers the road, sometime to impressive depths

The Victoria River, from the middle of Dashwood Crossing:

Today one lonely waterhole is all that remains of the mighty Victoria River
After the Wet there is plenty of water in the river – and plenty of crocs, too
