Cape Arid National Park

by admin

The southern coast of WA has spectacularly white beaches and stunningly clear, blue sea so it is altogether an amazing place to visit.

Unfortunately it is also very windy, which wears you down after a while. The ceaseless wind takes the edge of the daytime temperatures and after a cool change, it dropped down to 4 degrees overnight.

At the beach, the startling white sand does contrast rather nicely with the deep turquois of the clear ocean water.

Large crabs were hiding under the rocks and there was plenty of sea birds on the shore.

Cape Arid was named by the French in 1792 (Matthew Flinders gave it the current name in 1802) and in the 1870’s, early pioneers settled the area for sheep farming.

While not really remote, the closest town to Cape Arid is Esperance, which is 120 km away. The campground is on the banks of the Thomas River and surrounded by thick forests of banksia trees.
